Poetry – the journey of my soul
I’ve fluctuated in my tastes over
the years, enjoying many different book genres. While my heart firmly resides
with Paranormal and Fantasy right now, I still find myself reading Sci-Fi and
Horror from time to time. One thing that has not changed however, is my love of
poetry. I have a few OCD traits (I like to call them my eccentricities). As a
result, patterns, sequences and routines keep me grounded. There is such a
rhythmic beauty about poetry, in all its shapes and forms. The way the words
flow is like a gentle breeze or the pulsing of an incoming tide. I find the
rhythm and symmetry very soothing.
Writing poetry is just as therapeutic for me. Whenever I am going through a difficult time, or even a very joyous one sometimes, I find the need to express that. The poems I have included in “Pieces of Me” come from a wide section of my life, encompassing many years. I have grown so much in that time, and my life-journey has taken me places I never dreamed I would go. One of the things that has challenged and shaped my journey has been my health.
I’ve had health challenges since birth and as I’ve gotten older, more have cropped up. A lot of my poetry is a reflection on this part of my journey. The poem entitled “Listen” is symbolic of my chronic asthma. I went through a time where it was so severe that even going outside on a windy day would cause me to suffer a serious attack. So I wrote about it, my battle with the wind. Now it is one of my favorites out of all the poems I’ve written. A challenge that I faced and overcame. All my poems are very dear to me and I can only hope that my readers feel at least some of the deep emotion that has been poured into them.

Born and raised in Southern Indiana, this Hoosier
transplanted herself to the Windy City after graduate school. My passion is
teaching, with writing coming in a close second. I currently teach at the
College of DuPage (part-time faculty, hoping for a full-time gig soon!). I am a
third-degree black belt in hapkido, affliated with the US Hapkido Federation.
